JF6201 April 9 & 10, 2016 (10am-4:30pm) Sat/Sun (Jewelry Studio, Mill Building)
Explore ways to set stones beyond the basic cabochon and walled bezel. We’ll cover challenges in unusual stone shapes, with approaches including adding prongs to traditional bezels, partial bezels, and tab settings. We will also cover the foundations of faceted setting and variations that can spice up a traditional bezel for both faceted and cabbed stones. We will discuss but not cover other techniques such as pave, flush, and channel setting, and will discuss design considerations when choosing a stone’s setting.
NOTE: This is a techniques weekend and students should not expect to go home with finished jewelry, but should complete one or more stone setting for future use in a project.
A basic material kit will be provided. Students should also bring any of their own stones they choose, plus any metal and pattern wire they already own. Students should also bring a pair of dividers, a thick and thin black Sharpie marker, and a sketchbook.
Materials provided include: 1” x 6” - 26g Sterling Silver sheet, 6” – 10g Sterling Silver square wire, 6” – 10g Sterling Half Round Wire, 2 faceted gemstones and 1 geode slice. Ages 16 and over, a materials fee of $60 will be added to the tuition.
