JF0712 Mar 4 + 25, 2012 (10am-5pm) 2 Sundays (Jewelry Studio, Mill Building)
Day one, students will work with casting wax and wax working tools to craft their choice of metal buttons, belt buckles, and jewelry objects. Students will not learn casting techniques in this class – instead, finished models will be sent away for professional casting in student’s choice of silver or brass (copper possible with multi-unit orders). Students will return two weeks later to de-spur and finish the pieces they have made. The class is open to anyone, regardless of prior jewelry experience. It is also ideal for sculptors wanting to branch out into new media, and for knitters and clothiers who want to put the proper finishing touches on their handmade clothing. This is a great work-from-home hobby! There is a base studio/materials fee of $40 due at time of registration for wax model-making materials. You may also opt to purchase a tool kit (contents listed under Materials List tab above) for an additional $60. Casting fees vary, and are dependent upon size and metal.
Rachel Morris' Artist's Statement
"I was fortunate enough to be involved with the Firehouse Art Station, a school very much like BCC in Norman, Oklahoma, as a child. They had instructors who welcomed me into the adult jewelry making classes when I'd gone beyond the youth programs. Their patience and skill bolstered a strong creative streak and inspired me to try various media, ranging from silversmithing and stone setting to enamel work. Their training helped me begin a business making enameled jewelry and beads that I continued through my teen years, but in college and beyond, time was scarce and my creative energies went elsewhere until, years later, having wandered away from the craft for a time, I lucked upon Annemarie Ciuffini teaching at BCC. Her enthusiasm and ability to encourage her students' freedom to design as they chose thoroughly revived my interest. As a result, I'm about to hold my first show with two fellow students from BCC and have begun a new business (Eclectic Nature Jewelry & Design) which highlights the elements of nature presently influencing much of my design work. These days, I’m enjoying the creative outlet more than ever."
IMPORTANT NOTE: There will be additional fees incurred based on casting weights of items designed, metals selected, and quantities of each item made. Students will be given price quotes based on their designs and allowed to choose metals and quantities accordingly in the week between sessions. Casting can be done in silver, brass, gold, and platinum. (Copper also available if minimum total weight/number of pieces is met.)
