Add a new tool to your bag of tricks by planning dimensional forms before hitting the workbench. This one-day workshop will teach beginner students how to get the most from SketchUp, a popular free 3D modeling program. You'll learn how to customize the drawing space, how to draw objects accurately and efficiently, and how to use a drawing to create detailed plans and working drawings to use in your workshop. Woodworkers, wood turners, jewelry makers, potters, glass artists, interior designers and others can all use SketchUp to help plan and refine their creations. Students will learn by doing, creating two or more models (one simple, one complex) from start to finish. At the end of the course, students will have the confidence they need to go on to create great, original models on their own.

This workshop is BYO laptop computer. Plan to download the free version of SketchUp before attending class. Click on the Materials List tab above for downloading instructions.   David first became acquainted with SketchUp a half-dozen years ago, when editing an article about the program for Fine Woodworking magazine. Since then, he has edited two books by Tim Killen, including Google SketchUp Guide for Woodworkers. David is also the author of "Virtual Woodturning," an article published in the February 2012 issue of American Woodturner. Recently, David lectured at the Westport Mini Maker Faire, demonstrating how to use SketchUp to draw a Fender Stratocaster guitar.
  

Bring your own laptop or portable computer to class, as well as a pen and paper for taking notes. (SketchUp will not run on a Netbook, iPad, Kindle or other tablet.) Please download and install SketchUp on your laptop before attending the workshop. Here's a quick guide:

Installing SketchUp is no different from installing any other piece of software that you download from the Internet. If you have ever had to reinstall the driver for your printer, then you know how to install SketchUp. The procedures are essentially the same for Windows or Macintosh.

1. Go to sketchup.google.com. Click on the large "Download SketchUp" button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

2. A new screen will appear. Click again on the "Download SketchUp" button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

3. This will open a third screen. Click on the button for your computer operating system--Windows or Macintosh. Then click the "Agree and Download" button below the text of the terms and conditions boilerplate.

4. This opens a window that asks you whether you want to open the file or save it. Choose save the file. Once it has finished downloading (it only takes a few seconds), find the .dmg file and click on it. That will open a new window with an "installer.wpkg" file and an icon. Click on the icon and follow the prompts to install SketchUp with your other applications.

Now you are ready for the workshop. The course will cover SketchUp starting from the very beginning.
