New to making jewelry, or have you been doing it for years? The Saw is one of the most important tools in your toolbox, but do you know all you can do with it? Yes, you can saw out the bezel after you have soldered it to a backing, but probably cheat, like most of us and use shears or scissors to cut away the excess metal.
In this class we will review the components of the frame, blade sizes and when to use which size. We will pierce a pattern in copper for the bracelet, (think flowers, vines or a geometric pattern), then pierce out the backing for the same bracelet. Students can repeat that pattern and make earrings to match. The bracelet used cold connections, made of two parts using a saw and hammer. Students will use a torch to achieve “The Red” copper patina, better known as special sauce! Or use Liver of Sulfur (LOS) for a brownish black patina, or both. At the end of class students will walk away with a cuff bracelet and matching earrings. Ages 18 and over, a materials fee of $35.00 will be added to the tuition.

The focus of the class will be on “findings” - the components used to fasten pieces together (examples: jump rings, hooks, clasps, eye pins, head pins, wrapped loops) and how to use them and how to make them. By playing with aluminum, copper and brass wire, the class will explore the properties of wire and the possibilities that are available using simple tools. The students should expect to complete 2 or 3 class projects and have time to design pieces of their own. Beads from the instructor’s collection will be available as part of the class materials.

Repoussé is a technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped byhammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. There are few techniques that offer such diversity of expression while still being relatively economical. Chasing is the opposite technique to repoussé, and the two are used in conjunction to create a finished piece. It is also known as embossing.
During this class, students will learn the technique of creating a wide variety of shapes & patterns by manipulating sheet metal mounted in a pitch bowl. The weekend will cover all aspects of the process, including: selecting and/or making tools, material selection, do's and don'ts with particular materials, hammer control, heat and pitch management, and more. Students will begin the class with a discussion of the concepts of the technique, then they will make a set of small tools which will be their own. Once the tool set is ready, everyone will begin working on a design to work into the metal. Students can expect to leave this class with the tools necessary to continue to work at home or their own studio, as well as at least one finished piece.Ages 16 and up, a materials fee of $50 will be added to the tuition.

The history of chain making goes back to the beginning of adornment. Many countries/cultures have a version of ‘chain’ that accompanied their adornment heritage. Since the onset of the machine age, chain making has slipped aside as an art form. There are many chains established historically that are not difficult to make and are fun to learn. In this workshop you will be introduced to SIX CHAINS by demonstration and hands on. Students will construct a basic chain that will then go on to become an orbit chain, classic loop in loop, Egyptian links, Byzantine and woven chain (Viking knit). All vary in approach and style and will offer a nice variety to suit different pendants as well as develop skill. Handmade chains, for your one of a kind or small production pieces, will add a detail not accomplished by most purchased machine made chains. Each student will be encourage to make samplings of the chains introduced to develop muscle memory for future production and will be encouraged toward design thinking of their own. A metals foundation is required for this class. .

John Cogswell

JF0613   Nov 9-10, 2013 (10am - 5pm)  Saturday/Sunday (Jewelry Studio, Mill Building)

Master Instructor John Cogswell comes to BCC to teach his famous stone setting techniques. Explore the construction and setting techniques for ‘cut-card’ settings. This type of prong setting is assembled from sheet metal units, which are fitted together in a manner similar to the slotted assembly of cardboard displays. Hence, the name. The best-known example of this unique setting is the ubiquitous, commercial Tiffany setting. However, we’re moving well beyond that! This setting, which accommodates almost any cut of stone, faceted or cabochon, permits distinctive individuality, stylization. Topics to be covered include: creative design and layout; assembly and soldering techniques, and discussion about potential applications. A there will be a studio/materials fee of $30.

JE0513 November 2 , 2013 (10am-5pm)  Saturday(Jewelry Studio, Mill Building)

This class is designed for both beginners, and students with prior enameling experience.  The art of enameling is fusing colored glass onto metal.  It is a wonderful way of introducing color onto copper, silver or gold.  Learn the basics of using opaque, transparent and opalescent enamels, as well as the technique of cloisonné.  Topics covered will be sifting, stenciling and wet packing. Add some sparkle with silver foil and you will create an enameled piece on copper that can stand alone or be incorporated into a larger project. Beginners are welcome so no prior enameling experience is necessary. A studio/materials fee of $45 is due at time of registration, which covers enameling supplies for a round disk. Enameled disks are fit to mount on round pewter boxes. An optional pewter box can be ordered by the student during class or purchased from the instructor for an additional $45.
