Lampwork Glass Open Studio
Intermediate (Current Students, Experienced Artists)
Prerequisite: Completion of introductory level BCC lampwork glass class or demonstrated knowledge of the studio/equipment

Members of Brookfield Craft Center are welcome to purchase torch time by joining the Open Studio Program in the Glass Studio. (Not a Member? Click

to learn more or sign up.) BCC lampwork glass students and local skilled artists can purchase studio time as low as $10/hr to use BCC's oxy/propane Nortel Minor Bench Burners and annealing kilns to work independently on projects. Open Studio sessions are monitored by a lampwork glass artist, are 3 hours in length, and are held Wednesday evenings 6-9pm. Pay a drop-in rate at the door, or purchase 3 or more sessions on an Open Studio Card to participate in the program. Periodically, sessions may be dropped due to schedule conflicts. Participants will be notified with as much advanced notice as possible. A limited supply of effetre glass will be available to purchase from the studio at $2/rod. Participants using borosilicate glass must make prior special arrangements with the studio monitor and pay an additional $5 per session at the door to cover the additional gas use.
Participants must be BCC Members, possess basic torch skills, and have had prior instruction and experience using BCC's glass studio equipment. Only members who can exhibit sufficient skills and knowledge of equipment will be granted studio access. No refunds or credits will be offered for unused Open Studio sessions.

Do you have a pile of lampwork beads and you are not quite sure what to do with those little beauties? In this sampler course, you will create 4 pieces of wearable art using your handmade lampwork beads. During the class, you will learn how to make the perfect p-loop for earrings, use Beadalon for stringing, attach toggle claps and conclude with using crimping beads. After four hours, you can expect to have at least 2 pairs of earrings, one bracelet and one one necklace. Findings and use of equipment is included in your materials fee. Please bring an adequate amount of beads (including any spacer beads you may like) to complete these four pieces. Lampwork beads will be available for sale at an additional fee. A studio/materials fee of $30 is due at time of registration.

This full day class is jammed packed with many different surface decorating techniques that all include some aspect of SILVER! Silver plum glass will be used to create mirror-like finishes as both a base bead as well as an accent on light colored beads. An introduction to silver-rich, Double Heilx reduction glass frit will be reviewed. The application of silver leaf will be demonstrated and then we move on to the creation of silvered ivory stringer. Finally, the class will conclude with the use of fine silver wire -both as a surface design as well as encased. This class will provide ample time for your own exploration of the above learned techniques. After six hours, you can expect to make at least a handful of unique handmade glass beads for use in your creations. A studio/materials fee of $25 is due at time of registration.

Are you fascinated with handmade glass beads? Have you ever wondered just how they are made? This 4-hour Sampler Workshop will introduce you to the exciting world of Lampworking. Students will use Effetre (soft glass) rods, stringer, and frit to create eight different glass bead designs. You will learn how to use gravity and a handful of tools to shape and design the glass. After four hours, you can expect to have made a handful of beads that you can use to make a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art. A studio/materials fee of $20 is due at time of registration.
Try something new for 3 to 4 hours in a Sampler Workshop. Get an overview of the technical processes and creative possibilities of a specific medium. Acquaint yourself with the tools and equipment used in the studio and experience a hands-on introduction to the materials. Between tuition and materials, a Sampler Workshop will always cost $100 or less.

Visiting Master Instructor Holly Cooper comes to BCC from Austin, TX to help give your glass beads intricate detail. This intermediate workshop focuses on stringer control and design. The class will concentrate on using stringers to create intricate detailed patterns on glass beads while in the flame. Methods that aid in promoting individuality in our work by taking technique and design beyond the usual boundaries and toward a more personal style will be discussed.
Part of the session Holly Cooper will show how she manipulates fine stringers using simple tools and techniques, and discuss the properties of glass as it relates to the making of stringers that hold a highly detailed pattern.
Holly will also demonstrate and discuss surface design elements such as: rhythmic pattern, negative and positive space, color, scale and proportion, texture, bead shape and it’s relationship to the design and modular pattern development.
Enroll early to be reserve your spot--class size is limited to 8. A studio/materials fee is TBA.

Are you fascinated with handmade glass beads? Have you ever wondered just how they are made? This full day class will build your basic knowledge of glass bead making beyond the standard, round beads. By mastering your bead "footprint" and a using graphite marver, you will learn three new shapes: the "tube" bead, the "football" bead and the mighty "volcano" bead. Incorporating these exciting new shapes, along with round beads, can produce amazing wearable art pieces when combined together. We will spend the majority of our time working on perfecting shape with some discussion on surface decoration. Students will use black Effetre (soft glass) rods and decorate with various colors of stringer and frit. Placement of fine silver leaf on molten glass will also be reviewed. After six hours of intense flameworking, you can expect to make more than a handful of beads for use in your own creations.nbsp; A studio/materials fee of $30 is due at time of registration.

Ready to go beyond the basic round bead? Building upon your round bead making experience, learn how to use a graphite marver to shape molten glass into three new shapes (tube/'pencil' , bi-cone/'football', and the mighty 'Volcano'). The focus of this sampler course is shaping with only some discussion of surface design. Incorporating these new shapes, along with round beads, can produce amazing wearable art designs. Prior glass bead making experience is helpful, but not required for this workshop. A studio/materials fee of $20 is due at time of registration.
