MK8301 Sept 8 & 9, 2018 (10:00 am - 5:00 pm) Saturday/Sunday (Forge)
This course is an introduction to bladesmithing designed for people with little to no experience. We will cover the fundamentals of forging including heating the steel, hammering technique, different types of hammers, etc. Students will learn the basics of heat treating and heat treat their own blades. Grinding and finishing the blades will also be covered in some depth. Students will be creating a 4"-6" full tang knife with a wooden slab handle. Closed toed leather shoes, saftey glasses, and long pants required. Please wear non-synthetic clothing. Safety toe shoes highly recommended. Ages 16 and up, a materials fee of $40 will be added to the tuition.
Matthew Berry has been a blade smith for 13 years. He specializes in medieval knives and swords. In addition to blade smithing he also does lost wax casting and other foundry work. His work is sold online. He holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Connecticut.
