Come join us for a Visual Folk Arts camp - with an Arctic twist! While creating traditional-style artwork, participants will be introduced to the distinctive indigenous cultures who live in the Circumpolar North. Students will learn about the intriguing mythology and legends behind the art and the various animals and materials used in each of the five regions this 5-day session will cover: the North American Northwest and Alaska, Siberia, the Dorset region of Arctic Canada, the Saami culture of Scandinavia, and Greenland. Each session will begin with a slide show of the people who live there and examples of their artwork. Then the class will design and create similar art in those specific styles. Included will be painting, mask-making, leather and fabric ornamental design and sculpting. This cultural experience promises to cultivate artistic creativity, fuel the imagination, and enhance individual aesthetic vision.
