In this class students will explore the effects of fine silver wire, foil, mesh, reduction frit, and silver glass when creating lampwork beads. Techniques and tricks include silvered ivory stringer, using a reduction flame, color reactions with silver (and copper) foil, and manipulating and encasing silver glass to achieve the best color results. Previous lampwork experience is required. A materials fee of $84.00 will be added to the tuition.

Want to get a handle on stringer control? In this class you will learn some basic techniques and tips for getting the most out of your stringer work. Students will learn how to pull, place, and design with stringer, as well as heat control and hand and grip placement in order to achieve the best desired effects. Rhinos & elephants & bears...oh my! With a few tools and a bit of imagination, students will take simple lampworked bead shapes and sculpt them into an assortment of critters and wildlife.
Emphasis will be on heat control, stringer, glass and dot placement and fun.

Discover and create worlds of color and magic with glass! Glass flowers, animals, bugs and dots are just a few creations you will have the chance to create in our Lampwork class. Students begin by learning a quick overview of how glass is shaped in the torch, manipulated with certain tools and gravity to create one-of-a-kind beads. Using bead presses to create simple shapes, students will then use pre-pulled stringers to create unique designs. Each class will have a specific theme, with two or three different designs for each student to choose from. Themes include: Flowers -- Jungle Animals -- Aliens and Minions -- Bugs, Frogs and Lizards -- Lions, Tigers and Bears -- Ocean Creatures -- Barnyard Animals -- Dots, Stripes, and Swirls. Students will be able to pick their handcrafted beads up the next day.

Learn about the fascinating techniques of using silver and silvered glass when making lampwork beads. This class is focused on glass bead design including: silver leaf, fine silver wire, Double Helix shards and reduction frit. You will learn how to set a reduction flame in order to achieve dynamic results, place silver leaf on hot glass without burning it off, and create dynamic designs with silvered ivory glass. In just a few hours, you will learn how to correctly place your glass on a mandrel to get a great footprint, how to expand the size of your bead, and how to use a marver to shape molten glass. We will review and practive three exciting shapes: a tube or pencil bead, a soft bi-cone or football bead, and the mighty "volcano" bead. Ages 16 and up. BCC lampwork glass students and local skilled artists can purchase studio time to use BCC's oxy/propane Nortel Minor Bench Burners and annealing kilns to work independently on projects. This full day class is jammed packed with many different surface decoration techniques that all include some aspect of SILVER! Silver plum glass will be used to create mirror-like finishes as both a base bead as well as an accent on light colored beads. An Introduction to silver-rich, double heilx reduction glass frit will be reviewed. The application of silver leaf will be demonstrated and then we move on to the creation of silver ivory stringer. Finally, the class will conclude with the use of fine silver wire -both as a surface design as well as encased. This class will provide ample time for your own exploration of the above learned techniques. Are you fascinated with handmade glass beads? Have you ever wondered just how they are made? This full day class will build your basic knowledge of glass bead making beyond the standard, round beads. By mastering your bead "footprint" and a using graphite marver, you will learn three new shapes: the "tube" bead, the "football" bead and the mighty "volcano" bead. Incorporating these exciting new shapes, along with round beads, can produce amazing wearable art pieces when combined together. We will spend the majority of our time working on perfecting shape with some discussion on surface decoration. Visiting Master Instructor Holly Cooper comes to BCC from Austin, TX to help give your glass beads intricate detail.  This intermediate workshop focuses on stringer control and design. The class will concentrate on using stringers to create intricate detailed patterns on glass beads while in the flame. Methods that aid in promoting individuality in our work by taking technique and design beyond the usual boundaries and toward a more personal style will be discussed.

Part of the session Holly Cooper will show how she manipulates fine stringers using simple tools and techniques, and discuss the properties of glass as it relates to the making of stringers that hold a highly detailed pattern.
Holly will also demonstrate and discuss surface design elements such as: rhythmic pattern, negative and positive space, color, scale and proportion, texture, bead shape and itís relationship to the design and modular pattern development.

BCC lampwork glass students and local skilled artists can purchase studio time as low as $10/hr to use BCC's oxy/propane Nortel Minor Bench Burners and annealing kilns to work independently on projects.  Open Studio sessions are monitored by a lampwork glass artist, are 3 hours in length, and are held Wednesday evenings 6-9pm. Pay a drop-in rate at the door, or purchase 3 or more sessions on an Open Studio Card to participate in the program. Periodically, sessions may be dropped due to schedule conflicts. Participants will be notified with as much advanced notice as possible. A limited supply of effetre glass will be available to purchase from the studio at $2/rod. Participants using borosilicate glass must make prior special arrangements with the studio monitor and pay an additional $5 per session at the door to cover the additional gas use.

Participants must be BCC Members, possess basic torch skills, and have had prior instruction and experience using BCC's glass studio equipment. Only members who can exhibit sufficient skills and knowledge of equipment will be granted studio access. No refunds or credits will be offered for unused Open Studio sessions.

Teens must be in high school, and permission of parent/guardian is required for participation. Discover and create worlds of color and magicÖin glass! In this weekend workshop, participants will unlock the mystery of lampworking. This intensive introductory session will offer students the opportunity to work with the torches, melt glass, and learn to create color-filled glass beads that speak to their own unique vision and aesthetic. A variety of decorating techniques will be explored that allow for playful results, including frits, foiling, feathers, flowers and more. All level are welcome. A materials fee (TBD) is payable to the instructor the first day of class.

This course will introduce you to working with glass at the torch. Both clear and color, rods and tubes will be manipulated in the flame. Objects such as pendants, small animals, marbles, ornaments, and perfume bottles of various designs will be demonstrated and encouraged to replicate. Students will learn to operate the torch properly, and gain confidence and momentum to apply their own creativity. Additional materials are available for purchase from instructor if needed. A materials fee of $40, payable by cash or check, will be collected by the instructor at the beginning of the class. There are a maximum of 8 seats available for this class and there must be a minimum of 4 students in the class to allow it to run.
