In this workshop we will be focusing on improving your technique so that you can throw more efficiently, faster, easier and bigger. “There are many approaches to throwing on the wheel, and I believe it is important to have a so-called bag of tricks: several variations on techniques for a particular form or maneuver.” Each form may be approached differently to optimize your results. You will learn four ways to center, including variations for large amounts of clay, directional pulling and three ways to get height fast when pulling up your walls. Different hand positions and tools will be demonstrated for efficient throwing. The goal is not to change what works for you, but instead give you more choices and improve your technique. Lots of individual coaching provided. Previous wheel experience is necessary. A materials fee of $10 for the first bag of clay is added to the tuition. This class will allow you to try out new techniques, work to improve existing skills, and /or just have fun working in clay. Whether you have never touched hands to clay or you have had a few classes, this class is for you.  We will construct projects using the basic forms of cylinders, bowls and plates.  Hand building, wheel throwing and decoration techniques (including glazing) will be taught with lots of hands on instruction and demonstrations.  You will produce a number of glazed pieces that you decorated yourself.  The focus will be on having fun while learning a variety of techniques. Bring your own ideas for projects and personal goals or develop them with us in class. Students can expect to bring home glazed work either thrown or hand built, functional or sculptural in nature. An additional .05 per cubic inch firing fee with glazes included will be collected; assessment of fee determined by measured size of finished piece.
Added value of attending two docent (clay) classes  is offered with our compliments to students who attend this  class. Students may choose to attend either the Wednesday afternoon docent clay sessions held from 1:30 to 4:30pm on Oct. 15 and 22, or two Thursday evening docent clay studios from 6 to 9pm on Oct. 30 and Nov. 6.

CL0612 May 5, 2012 (10a-5p) Saturday (Ceramics Barn)

Brookfield Craft Center welcomes master potter Hayne Bayless to our ceramics studio. Spend the day with Hayne and fellow enthusiasts for a hands-on workshop on handbuilding. Students will explore extrusion and slab techniques as they relate to making functional stoneware. Myths will be busted and secrets revealed. Hayne's approach is to let the process show in the work, keeping in mind that by keeping out of clay’s way, the material will reveal its true nature and the results will remain fresh and lively. Learn unconventional forming methods and unusual approaches to surface decoration. Topics will include cutting stencils from Tyvek, colored slip inlay and stretched slabs, liquid latex resist and deer-tail brushes, fashioning tools out of common materials and modifying existing ones to suit specific needs, and how to make custom extruder dies.  A $20 studio/materials fee is due at time of registration and covers a 25 lb. bag of stoneware clay and additional materials. Space is limited, so don't wait to register.
