FW4100 Four Sessions: July 22, July 24, July 29, July 31 (1-4pm) Tuesday and Thursday (LTB Studio )

Materials are included in tuition. This workshop will teach students the preparation of a warp and how to complete a project weaving on a basic rigid heddle loom. This simple, portable loom introduces weavers to many of the elements of weaving done using larger, more complex looms. It’s a great way to start weaving and also a great resource to enhance the practice of an experienced weaver or other fiber artists such as knitters. Rigid heddle weaving can be a craft in itself or the introduction to more complex weaving. Although the loom is easy to learn on, it also allows for many different weave structures and can be the only loom a weaver needs for scarves, table items, dish towels, and fabric for clothing. The workshop will also include discussions about the qualities of different fibers, the history of weaving, and planning for original projects. By the end of the class, students will have learned the basic steps for preparing a warp, weaving, and finishing. Students will complete their first project--a scarf in colors and textures of their choice. Students will have 3 options for looms: Purchase a loom from instructor. $141.00 Rent a loom from instructor. $35.00 which will be credited toward purchase price if student decides to buy the loom. Bring your own loom. I would be happy to discuss the attributes of different looms to help decide whether to purchase a loom from a different manufacturer.

THIS WORKSHOP IS FREE. Floor looms, and many table looms, are both complex machines and beautiful pieces of furniture. Looms, both heirloom and new, are usually made of fine woods that benefit from regular care. The intricate mechanisms of a loom that are required by the weaving process also need to be conditioned on a regular basis, just as the working parts of a car need to be conditioned. This workshop will give loom owners all the practice and information they need to maintain a smooth-working loom. Demos and hands-on experience with a range of different types of floor looms in the BCC Fiber Studio will give participants practical knowledge about looms.

FA0213 July 20, 2013 (10am-2pm) Saturday (LTB Fiber Studio)

Norma Schlager is an award winning quilter whose work has been juried into many shows, galleries, and museums nationally and internationally. For the past several years she has used her hand dyed fabrics almost exclusively in her quilts. In this class she will share her easy method of fabric dyeing. No messy hot pots on the stove, no tedious stirring. You will use fiber reactive powdered dyes, room temperature water and zip-lock bags. You will dye several yards in class and learn the basics that will allow you to continue at home and it's almost guaranteed that you will be hooked. A $20 studio/materials fee will be charged at the time of registration.

Do you like knitting because you can take your project on the go? Try weaving on a portable rigid heddle loom and bring your creative endeavors with you no matter how far away you roam. For beginners, this workshop will introduce weavers to using a 2-heddle loom (bring your own, or rent or purchase one from us). You will learn how to set up a loom with the warp and how to make a woven sampler of mixed textures. For students with weaving experience, you will weave a project of your own design. The workshop will examine fibers best for weaving, different weaving structures, and the elements of designing your own unique creations. Beginners studio/materials fee of $18 payable to Brookfield Craft Center is due at time of registration. Experienced weavers can come to class with looms pre-warped, and pay $18 studio/materials fee or bring your own fiber. Portable looms can be rented with an option to buy (please call us with renting inquiries). If you'd like to purchase a 20" rigid heddle loom for $135.50, or a 24" loom for $167.00, please place your order with us as soon as possible.

Andrea Shedletsky
FA0112 Jun 9, 2012 (10am-2pm) Saturday (LTB Fiber Studio)

Artist Andrea Shedletsky will divulge her specialty techniques to transfer color and patterns to silk scarves in this short, fun workshop.  Bring 8 to 10 old silk ties or scarves to class (find them in your closet, or favorite thrift shop--they don't have to be in perfect condition, just with interesting colors or patterns).  With a simple, but totally engaging process, students will transfer the prints and colors from the ties to white silk scarf blanks.  During the workshop, expect to complete one to two scarves. The results are wonderfully surprising.
